Parents and Squadron Sponsoring Committee members helped out at 746 Lightning Hawk Squadron's 2012 Mess Dinner making it one of the most successful yet! Lead by Chef Craig they cooked, plated, served and cleaned while cadets and staff enjoyed a delicious 5 course meal. Thank you for everything!

Conair Aviation Work Experience Opportunity

The Air Cadet League in partnership with Conair is offering a 40 hour work experience program to selected senior cadets that will provide them with the opportunity to work in an aerospace technical maintenance facility and fulfil their High School Graduation Transitions work experience requirement. The program is designed to expose those cadets who are contemplating a career in the aerospace industry to a real life experience helping maintain aircraft.

Cadets attend the program as a high school student. To qualify for the program a cadet must:

be a resident of BC,
be a grade 11 or 12 high school student,
be eligible for enrolment in the provincial work experience program,
be excused from school for the period of the one week work experience,
have successfully completed a criminal record check, and
have a demonstrated technical interest.

Students will be expected to attend an orientation tour and briefing at Conair on Tues 31 Jan at 10am, provide their own pair of approved work safety boots and provide their own transportation to and from the Conair Maintenance Facility at the Abbotsford Airport. The Conair normal work day is from 7am to 3:30 pm. Students from outside the Lower Mainland are responsible for providing their own transportation, rations and quarters. The program will consist of two week long work serials of 4 students each. The first serial will be conducted from 6th to 10th Feb and the second from 13th to 17th Feb 2012.

Work Experience With Langley Regional Airport

If you are a grade 11 or 12 student, here is a great opportunity in our own city! The Air Cadet League in partnership with Langley Regional Airport, is offering a 40 hour work experience program to selected senior cadets that will provide them with the opportunity to work at Langley Airport in airfield operations and fulfil their High School Graduation Transitions work experience requirement. Applicants Write Entrance Exam

Abbotsford, BC - Seven 746 Lightning Hawk cadets: WO2 Sollows, Sgt Marra, Sgt Loewen, Sgt Ardila, FCpl Burger, FCpl Burkowski, and Cpl Lee, wrote the Canadian Forces Qualifying Exam for flying scholarship courses last Saturday. The exam comes after 13 weeks of ground school training and is one of the most crucial parts if the application process. Now these cadets will focus on preparing for their interview boards as they compete to be selected for the Glider Pilot and Power Pilot Scholarship courses which will be held this summer.

Exercise Icepick. Feb 10 - Feb 12

So far this training year we have conducted one exercise and our second one is quickly approaching. Exercise Icepick has now been confirmed for the weekend of Friday February 10 - Sunday Feb 12. So if you have not done so yet, ensure that you keep this weekend free. With most of the actual training completed, this exercise will focus mainly on the application of the survival knowledge which the cadets have already learned. Generally, this is one of the most fun as well as challenging exercises of the training year, so it is strongly encouraged for cadets to attend this exercise. A Warning Order, Sign up sheet, and Kit List will soon be available both on the website, as well as on the thursday night training night.

Congratulations WO2 Stoffer.

Sunday, Dec 4th - WO2 Stoffer has shot his first perfect target since joining the range program in 2008. It takes many years of dedication and practice to reach this skill level, and now he is one of the few from 746 Lightning Hawk Sqn to join the ``100 Club``.

746 Lightning Hawk Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron is pleased to welcome Officer Cadet Anthony Gandouin and Officer Cadet Steve Brown as newly attested officers in the Cadet Instructor Cadre; a branch of the Canadian Forces. Officer Cadets Gandouin and Brown were among 10 attested members officially welcomed into the Canadian Forces in a ceremony on Monday, December 5th by members of the Regional Cadet Support Unit (Pacific) at Boundary Bay Airport. Officer Cadet Gandouin has volunteered with 746 Lightning Hawk as a Civilian Instructor since 2008 and Officer Cadet Brown has worked with the squadron since September of this year.

Severe Weather Procedures

In the event that winter weather conditions cause it to be unsafe to travel to cadet training activities or if our facilities become unusable for training, cadet activities may be cancelled at the discretion of the CO. In the event of an activity cancellation a notice will be immediately placed here on the squadron's website. Senior NCOs will also attempt to contact cadets by phone. If you are unsure if an activity is cancelled or not, always check the website or inquire through the chain of command.

Cadets and their parents should not travel to cadet activities if they feel that it is unsafe to do so. Driving conditions can be monitored at www.drivebc.ca .

Canadian Museum of Flight Memberships

Did you know that cadets of 746 Lightning Hawk are eligible for a free Canadian Museum of Flight Junior Membership? Cadets can also volunteer at the museum, and bank their time towards free rides in one of the museum's heritage aircraft! To apply, complete the application form and return it to an officer at the squadron.

Monthly Parents Meetings

Just a reminder that there is a regularly scheduled Parents meeting the first Thursday of every month. This is set to occur the same night as the Commanding Officer's inspection parade of the cadets. We meet at 6:30pm for updates and then break for the parade and then resume again for any questions and answers you may have of the Sponsoring Committee or of Captain Daniels. This parade is also when your son or daughter may receive promotions or awards and this is an event you would not want to miss.

We ask that you make an effort to attend these meetings and learn what your Sponsoring Committee is working towards on behalf of the cadets, officers and parents. It is our goal to meet all of you this year and to help you become involved.

Cadet Field Uniforms

Our first survival training exercise is coming up in November. Many cadets choose to purchase a field uniform that they are permitted to wear rank and headdress with for survival training. We have set-up a new Field Uniform page to provide more information on what uniform is approved and where you can acquire it. Although it can be purchased second-hand at many surplus stores, we have also provided you with a contact that sells the uniform brand new for a reasonable price. There are also complete packages for the first-time buyer!

Change in Medal Position

Effective September 1st 2011, the location of cadet medals on the uniform has changed. CATO 55-04 now states that "Canadian Orders, Decorations and Medals shall be suspended above the left breast pocket of the jacket, immediately above and centred. “Cadet Medals” shall be suspended above the right breast pocket of the jacket, immediately above and centred. Under no circumstances, are “Cadet Medals” to be suspended above the left breast pocket of the jacket even when a cadet has no Canadian Order, Decoration or Medal."
